Index funds

Index funds and index investing

An index fund follows a published list of securities instead of a manager choosing each company. Index investing is how many people own a wide set of stocks or bonds with one holding.

A broad U.S. stock index is the example most readers have in mind: hundreds of large companies, weighted so the bigger businesses count for more. Hespera index plans are private portal plans built around that category. They are portal plans, and you can lose capital.

What an index fund owns

The fund, or the plan that follows the same idea, holds the names on the list or a sample of them. When the list goes up, the holding tends to go up. When the list goes down, the holding tends to go down. Index investing does not include a promise to beat the list, and it does not skip the decline.

People compare index funds with picking single stocks because the list already contains many businesses. One failure then matters less than it would in a one-company portfolio. A market-wide drop still shows up in the holding.

How Hespera uses the index category

The plan catalog has an index category next to stock and bond categories. The card shows the minimum and the term. Stock-focused plans start at the published floor. Read that card, and the account pages, before funding. Identity review applies before an account is marked verified.

Questions people ask

What is an index fund?

A fund that tracks a published list of securities, such as a broad stock or bond market list, instead of a manager selecting each name. The holding rises and falls with that list. You can lose capital.

How is an index fund different from an ETF?

An ETF is a basket that, in public markets, trades through the day. Many ETFs track an index, so an index ETF is both. A traditional index mutual fund is priced once a day. Hespera index plans are private portal plans in the index category.

Does an index fund remove risk?

No. Index investing spreads company-specific risk across the list. The list itself can fall, and the holding falls with it.
